Yuan Horne Cho

Markham, ON

I’m Yuan, but I also go by Leo, and I am completing an MEng degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto. During my undergraduate also at UofT, I completed a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and Biochemistry. I am very excited to making this project a success as I have always been interested in sharing the wonders of science to young brilliant minds. Since the topic of this project is focused on plastic pollution and environmental sustainability, I am also personally motivated; I grew up in the Caribbean, and the pollution of the seas and its effect on marine wildlife is something I am serious about, which is also why I was VP Internal of the Environmental Club in undergraduate.

Science Engagement - Empowering Youth in Science for a More Sustainable Future

Science Engagement is a program created by graduate students from the University of Toronto to teach elementary students about plastic pollution and motivate youth to improve their communities. The program is expected to be 1-hour long per classroom with a video and discussion on plastic, a microscope experiment, discussion of a written passage, and questions for volunteers. We hope to interact with students in a way that keeps them engaged with the content and build sustainable habits and practices.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

    United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

      How the project works

The program is expected to be 1-hour long per classroom with a video and discussion on plastic, a microscope experiment, discussion of a written passage, and questions for volunteers. We will be focusing on elementary schools and running presentations concurrently across the GTA during the fall and winter semesters.

      Project Impact

Our project hopes to have a positive impact on the youth and their communities by giving them hands-on experience to build an appreciation for environmental sustainability. By giving the youth an opportunity to learn more about environmental awareness at a young age, we hope to help build sustainable habits which are applicable to all stages of life..

      Project Mission

Our Mission Statement is: Empowering youth in science for a more sustainable future. Our goal is to give students the opportunity to be more involved with environmental sustainability in a way that keeps them interested, motivated, and engaged to help build a future with sustainability in mind.

      Project Team

Our team consists of over ten highly motivated graduate students of the UofT.
